PLA

PLA (polylactic acid) is a plant-based thermoplastic and the default filament for most desktop 3D printers.

Why it matters

PLA is where most people start. It prints at a low nozzle temperature, warps little, and needs only a warm heated bed. That makes it forgiving for beginners and good for detailed models, prototypes and display pieces.

The trade-off is heat. Prusa notes that PLA becomes soft and deforms above about 60 °C. A part left somewhere hot, such as a parked car or a window in summer sun, can sag. For parts that must stay stiff in heat, look at PETG or ASA instead.

PLA is the baseline other materials are compared against. Prices vary by brand and spool size, so compare per kilogram rather than per spool.
