Spool weight
Spool weight usually means the net weight of the filament on a reel, such as 1 kg. It can also mean the weight of the empty reel, so check which one a listing states.
Why it matters
Net weight is what you pay for, and it sets your price per kg. A 1 kg spool and a 750 g spool at the same price are not the same deal.
Polymaker, for example, lists its PolyLite PLA in 1 kg, 3 kg and 5 kg net weights. The empty 1.75 mm reels it lists weigh 140 g for the 1 kg size and about 425 g for the 3 kg size, each with a small tolerance.
That gap matters if you weigh a spool on a kitchen scale to see how much filament is left. Subtract the empty reel’s weight from the reading. Reel weights vary by brand and by cardboard or plastic, so don’t assume one figure fits all.
Spool weight also affects printing. Larger reels are wider and heavier, so they may not fit every spool holder. Check your printer’s spool holder before buying a big reel.
